The Shagya Registry of North America (SHARONA) is the NASS registry for Purebred Shagya-Arabians, Shagya-Arabian (Book II), Appendix Shagya-Arabians and Partbred Shagya horses.
SHARONA is affiliated with the International Shagya-Arabian Society (ISG) and has been recognized as such by the ISG as an official Member Registry since 1986.
SHARONA has the following four classifications of horses for Registration purposes:
Purebred Shagya-Arabians and Shagya-Arabians appearing in any studbook accepted by the ISG are recognized as eligible for registration in SHARONA . Also, those horses which conform to the definition of Purebred Shagya-Arabian and Shagya-Arabian as defined by the NASS Breeding Committee and NASS Breed Standard are eligible if approved by the Breeding Committee.
A horse whose parents have been approved for Purebred Shagya-Arabian breeding by NASS and whose pedigree contains no more than of 9 out of 16 Purebred Arabians in the 4th generation is eligible for registration as a Purebred Shagya-Arabian (Book I), providing the registry application rules are followed by the owner of the horse.
A horse whose parents approved for Purebred Shagya-Arabian breeding Book II by NASS and whose pedigree contains no more than of 9 out of 16 Purebred Arabians in the 4th generation is eligible for registration as a Shagya-Arabian (Book II), providing the registry application rules are followed by the owner of the horse. .
Appendix Shagya-Arabians (formerly Part Shagya-Arabians) appearing in any studbook accepted by the ISG are recognized as eligible for registration in SHARONA.
Offspring of one NASS registered Shagya-Arabian and one Purebred Arabian shall be registered as Appendix Shagya-Arabians. Also, a horse with one registered purebred Shagya-Arabian parent or one Appendix-Shagya-Arabian parent and whose other parent's pedigree is composed entirely of Purebred Arabian or a mixture of Purebred Arabian and Shagya-Arabian shall be registered as an Appendix Shagya-Arabian.
When applying for registration of an Appendix Shagya-Arabian, the applicant is required to submit all registration papers from the breed registry in which the Arabian parent is registered.
A Part-bred horse with one NASS registered Purebred Shagya-Arabian (Book I) Shagya-Arabian( Book II), Appendix Shagya-Arabian, or Part-Shagya parent and whose other parent's pedigree is composed of any other breed or breeds, or a horse with at least one Shagya-Arabian ancestor in their fourth generation, may be registered as a Part Shagya with NASS.
To register a Shagya-Arabian bred horse born in North America with SHARONA, you must complete a Registration Application for Horses Born in North America.
Applications for foals should be submitted before December 31 of their birth year in order to avoid a late fee. Older horses are eligible for registration. If the horse to be registered has been previously recorded with any other registry, a copy of the complete valid registration must accompany the NASS application.
To register an imported Shagya-Arabian bred horse with SHARONA, you must complete a Registration Application for Imported Horses. The application clearly states at the top what documentation is required, including: copy of certificate of registration and official pedigree, record of transfer to current owner, date of importation, translation into English of any documentation in a foreign language and a standard foal application for a foal imported in utero.
Registration applications may be downloaded from the NASS Website (see below) or requested from the NASS Registrar.
The parentage of all purebred Shagya-Arabian, Shagya Arabian (Book II) and Appendix Shagya-Arabian (previously "Part-Shagya-Arabian") foals registered with SHARONA must be verified by DNA typing the sire, the dam, and the foal. NASS accepts DNA Profiles from other organizations for parentage verification upon those organizations' labs releasing it to NASS' lab (University of Kentucky). If you are in doubt as to whether or not the stallion and/or mare have already been DNA typed, check with the NASS Registrar or NASS Breeding Committee.
The DNA SAMPLE form can be downloaded from the NASS website or requested from the NASS Registrar.
Beginning with the foaling year 2021, all purebred Shagya-Arabians, Shagya Arabians (Book II) and Appendix Shagya-Arabians registered with SHARONA must be tested for SCID and CA, unless both parents are already recorded as being "clear”. Lab reports must be sent to the NASS Registrar.
Transfer of Ownership & Replacement Certificates:
When selling or transferring ownership of a horse that's registered with SHARONA, the owner of record (seller) must sign the transfer record on the registration certificate, filling in the date of sale and name and address of the new owner (buyer). The new owner should send the registration certificate, a copy of the Bill of Sale and the appropriate transfer fee to the NASS Registrar. Please do not send the original bill of sale. Send a copy and retain the original for your records. You may cross out anything on the submitted copy that you'd prefer to keep private (i.e. price, terms, etc.). Once the transfer is recorded, the registration certificate will be returned to the new owner.
Lost or Damaged Certificates: Replacement certificates may be requested by contacting the NASS Registrar and paying the certificate replacement fee.
